
Willy Fleckhaus art directed Twen, a German magazine, from 1959 to 1970. Full-bleed photography that consumed the entire page. Type set at extreme scale. White space used as aggressively as ink.
What made it work was discipline. For every spread that broke the grid, three obeyed it completely. The rule-breaking had meaning because the rule existed.
David Bowie had a Twen spread. Helmut Newton shot for it. The grid was the invisible structure that made the chaos feel intentional.
